What is Diesel Bug?
Diesel bug is contamination of diesel fuel by microbes such as bacteria and fungi. Water can get into diesel fuel as a result of condensation, rainwater, penetration or absorption from the air – modern bio diesel is especially hygroscopic and with EU directives leading to the increasing amount of bio fuel into diesel, the problem is predicted to get worse. Fuel companies agree that left untreated fuel will only remain reliable for 6 to 12 months, after that time fuel contamination like diesel bug can begin to appear, As the water falls to the bottom of the tank this makes the perfect breeding ground for ‘diesel bug’.
Bacteria can multiply at a rate of around 2 million times over a 24 hour period in good conditions, after this 24 hour period the bacteria then dies off and will fall to the bottom of the fuel tank and then collects as a slimy black sludge, this then can produce hydrogen sulphide that corrodes engine components like fuel pumps and injectors and cause:
• Clogged filters
• Clogged fuel tank outlets
• Cause frequent filter changes
• Cause engines to misfire
• Cause Corrosion of engine parts
• Cause Loss of power
